Designer of the Year

In print on 7 February 2003

Designer of the Year logoA little while back, sometime between the Brit nominations and the Golden Globes, Twenty/20 was thinking: you know, there really aren’t enough awards these days. When, as if by magic, news arrived of a cunning plan to help correct this very deficit.

Yes, the Design Museum has launched (or beaten, or strung up, or whatever you do with gongs) its very own gong (see) for, logically enough, designers, who must be based in the UK. The four nominees, selected by the likes of Paul Smith and Marc Newson along with DM leaderine Alice Rawsthorn, will be celebrated in a Spring exhibition before learning which of them gets to pocket the £25K prize.

We must admit Solange Azagury-Partridge is a new one on us – very nice jewellery, apparently – but we’ve already tipped the Twenty/20 hat to Tord Boontje for rescuing last year’s chandelier craze from kitsch, and this Jonathan Ive bloke rings a bell, too. The final contender is Rockstar, the Edinburgh-based developer of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the game the chattering classes hate to love. We’ll have full details of frocks and acceptance speeches in June.
